Energy Management Project

The Energy management project of the Complexe Scientifique de Québec was targeting the implementation of 5 specific measures:

1) Measurements of main transformers (2000 amp):  Blocs « B », « C », « D » and « E ».

2) Control of laboratory ventilation hoods

3) Control of greenhouse lighting (Zoning refinements) 

4) Measurement of consumption of power-hungry clients' equipments (>75 kWh)

5) Control of office and laboratories spaces (Zoning refinements - from 4 to 66 zones) Bloc « C »

Given that the complex of 6 buildings was build in concrete, during the '70s, it would have been very costly to deploy a traditionnal centralised monitoring & control system, requiring kilometers of wiring in tubing, through concrete walls and ceiling. The DimOnOff soluion, using the existing electrical network of the buildings, was therefore a much more practical choice, more economical, and much simpler to put in place. 

By installing DimOnOff electrical consumption monitoring equipment, SIQ was able to rapidly identify certain patterns of behaviors in lighting usage (some derived from the functionning mode of tyhe old lighting control system, that would open and close everything at specific hours of the day, whether the areas were occupied or not...), et mis en place du zonage beaucoup plus raffiné, ainsi que des routines d'automatisation de fermeture. Chaque zone possède son (ses) propre(s) claviers de contrôle, lesquels sont monitorés par le système central, de manière à bien comprendre l'historique d'utilisation, et suggérer des changements de comportement visant une meilleure utilisation énergétique.

The greenhouse complex was also the object of zoning, in order to maximize usage of power only for the experiment surface that was being used. The relays that are specifically used in these rooms allow to monitor the electrical consumption, and have enabled the different customers to monitor the specific consumption of each zone, coresponding to different experiments, therefore helping in raising awareness to the new orientations of energy savings.
