Pittsburgh Undertakes Connected LED Street Lighting Project Through a Smart City Management System
The City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is launching a transformative project to upgrade its street lighting system. This initiative will replace 36,536 outdated high-pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with advanced, energy-efficient LED fixtures. The city has selected Dimonoff’s comprehensive mesh network lighting management system to enable real-time monitoring and control of the new lighting network.
Smarter Streetlights, Smarter City
Pittsburgh’s street lighting initiative is powered entirely by Dimonoff’s smart lighting control system, which includes an urban asset management platform, smart wireless lighting nodes, and gateways. The RME nodes enable wireless control of the city’s 36,536 new LED streetlights, forming a robust mesh network managed by G3+ Gateways, which connect seamlessly to Dimonoff | SCMS platform. Together, these systems allow city officials to monitor energy consumption, detect outages, and optimize maintenance in real–time, enhancing public safety, improving visibility, and advancing Pittsburgh’s sustainability goals.

Dimonoff | SCMS also offers advanced maintenance tools, including proactive monitoring of streetlight performance. By leveraging specific alarms and notifications, Pittsburgh’s teams can optimize maintenance schedules, reduce response times, and minimize unnecessary fieldwork. This approach not only enhances operational efficiency but also generates significant cost savings.
Dark Skies Compliance
The new LED fixtures installed will comply with the City’s “Dark Sky Lighting” ordinance, announced by the Division of Sustainability and Resilience in 2021. This ordinance prioritizes technology that directs light only where needed, uses lower color temperatures for a warmer, more comfortable glow, and ensures uniform light output for safety and visibility. By adopting these principles, Pittsburgh joins 52 other U.S. cities and over 300 communities worldwide committed to reducing light pollution and enhancing nighttime environments. Notably, Pittsburgh is the first city in Pennsylvania to implement this eco-friendly, forward-thinking initiative.
Dimonoff | SCMS advanced lighting management capabilities further support compliance with Dark Skies principles. The system allows city officials to remotely adjust lighting levels with precision, dimming or enhancing illumination as needed for specific locations or events. This level of control not only minimizes unnecessary light but also ensures that each fixture delivers the right amount of illumination to promote safety and sustainability.
Commitment to Sustainability for a Brighter Future
The project, made possible through $3 million in federal stimulus funds from the American Rescue Plan and $12 million in bond funding, exemplifies Pittsburgh’s commitment to post-pandemic recovery and sustainable urban development. By leveraging Dimonoff’s expertise in smart lighting solutions, the city is setting new standards in energy efficiency and urban innovation.
"We are proud to partner with the City of Pittsburgh on this visionary project. Our Smart City Management System will not only deliver immediate energy savings but also lay the groundwork for Pittsburgh’s future as a leader in smart city technology."
Bernard Têtu, Founding President at Dimonoff
Pittsburgh’s new smart street lighting infrastructure reflects the city’s dedication to sustainability and equitable development. The project is designed to significantly reduce energy consumption while enhancing service reliability by minimizing outages. This eco-friendly transition supports Pittsburgh’s broader green initiatives, substantially reducing the city’s carbon footprint and promoting a healthier, more sustainable urban environment for all residents.
Laying the Foundations for a Connected Smart City
Smart streetlighting represents just one element of a broader smart city ecosystem, but it serves as the backbone of Pittsburgh’s connected infrastructure. By integrating Dimonoff’s smart lighting control system, the city will establish a scalable network capable of supporting future IoT applications, such as environmental monitoring, parking management, and public safety systems. This foundational infrastructure ensures enhanced urban services while opening doors to innovative solutions that position Pittsburgh as a leader in smart city development.
"We are proud to support Pittsburgh in its journey toward smarter urban infrastructure. By adopting connected LED lighting, the city will not only achieve significant savings in energy and maintenance costs but also unlock new opportunities to enhance safety, sustainability, and quality of life for its residents."
