The City of Laval was named a finalist in the Municipal category of Écotech Québec’s Eurêka! 2024 Awards. The nomination covered two Dimonoff projects that are distinct on the street but share one platform: smart street lighting control, and the dynamic traffic signage that came after it.
Laval converted 37,000 luminaires to LED in 2021 and put them under Dimonoff | SCMS, which lets the city set light levels per zone, detect a failure without waiting for a report, and plan maintenance around what the network says rather than around a fixed round. The published outcome is CAD 2.75 million saved each year, 15 million kWh of electricity, and 10,607 tonnes of CO2 avoided annually. The signage phase reused the network rather than building a second one. Dynamic panels in the densest parts of the city tell drivers about parking restrictions and maintenance windows in real time, which matters most during snow removal — fewer accidental infractions, fewer tows, and an operation that runs on information rather than on guesswork. Because the panels joined the existing lighting mesh, the expensive part of the deployment was already paid for.
Laval did not win the category. The nomination still says something worth recording: an independent cleantech cluster looked at what the city built and counted it among the projects moving Quebec’s energy efficiency forward.
