Pittsburgh converts 36,536 streetlights with Dimonoff | SCMS

The City of Pittsburgh selected Dimonoff | SCMS to manage the conversion of 36,536 high-pressure sodium streetlights to networked LED. RME nodes and G3+ gateways form the mesh; the two-year rollout is tracked publicly on the city's own project site.

The City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is replacing 36,536 high-pressure sodium cobra-head fixtures with LED, and selected Dimonoff | SCMS to monitor and control the network that results. RME wireless nodes on each fixture form a self-healing mesh managed by G3+ gateways, which report to the platform. City teams can meter energy at the pole, see an outage the night it happens rather than the week someone reports it, and send a crew only when the diagnostics say one is needed.

The new fixtures comply with Pittsburgh’s Dark Sky Lighting ordinance, introduced by the city’s Division of Sustainability and Resilience in 2021, which calls for light directed only where it is needed, warmer colour temperatures and uniform output. Remote dimming is what makes that practical at scale: levels can be set per zone or per event rather than fixture by fixture in the field.

The project is funded by USD 3 million in American Rescue Plan stimulus and USD 12 million in bonds, and the conversion is expected to run about two years. Pittsburgh publishes its own schedule and a progress map at PGHLED.ORG.

The same network is the groundwork for whatever the city adds next. A mesh that already reaches every pole is the expensive part of any later deployment — environmental sensing, parking, public-safety beacons — and it is now in place.
