Cutting energy consumption is no longer the only reason to convert a public lighting network. The question that follows a conversion is what the network costs to run, and that is where a control platform earns its place.
Detecting failures without being told
In a conventional network a municipality learns about a dead luminaire from a patrol or a resident’s call. Both are slow, and both generate travel that produces nothing.
A connected fixture reports its own status. Teams see which equipment is affected and where, and can order the interventions accordingly. Montréal runs 132,500 streetlights across 19 boroughs this way, on one platform. The City’s own published targets put the maintenance saving at 55 percent, higher than the 35 percent expected on energy, and the gap comes from the control layer rather than from the LEDs.
Planning maintenance instead of reacting to it
Once fixtures report consumption and faults, maintenance can be planned rather than dispatched. Fewer trips, fewer manual inspections, and a schedule built from what the network says rather than from a fixed rotation.
Laval manages more than 37,000 streetlights and 4,000 connected dynamic signage panels on the same platform, and set out a target of $2.75 million in savings a year.
Adjusting light levels remotely
Light levels can be set against traffic periods, high-activity areas, events and seasons, rather than a single curve applied to the whole network year-round. That reduces consumption further, and reduces the hours a fixture runs at full output.
One platform for more than lighting
The lighting network is a distributed grid with power and communication at every pole, which makes it the cheapest place to attach other municipal sensing: dynamic signage, noise monitoring, water level, temperature and other environmental sensors. Shawinigan uses the platform for smart lighting and connected urban sensors on one centralised infrastructure.
That is the part most easily missed at procurement time. The controller decision made for lighting sets what the city can add later without a second network.
